Dear Friends, Clients and Colleagues,
As Hurricane Milton rapidly intensifies in the Gulf of Mexico, we want to share critical updates and steps for preparedness. This storm, which has already reached Category 1 status, is projected to strengthen into a major hurricane with winds possibly exceeding 120 mph as it approaches Florida’s west coast by midweek.
Milton poses significant threats, including torrential rainfall, dangerous storm surge, and strong winds that could impact communities across Florida, especially in low-lying areas. Hurricane-force winds now extend up to 20 miles from the center, with tropical-storm-force winds reaching as far as 80 miles.
What to Expect & How to Prepare
Given the potential for heavy rainfall, flooding, and strong winds, Miami-Dade residents should be prepared for possible power outages, road closures, and evacuation orders in vulnerable areas. Here’s how you can act now:
- Stay informed: Track the storm through the National Hurricane Center and local news outlets for real-time updates. Keeping an eye on the storm’s progress will help you stay prepared as its path becomes clearer.
- Secure your home: Bring outdoor furniture inside, reinforce windows and doors, and clear any debris that could become projectiles in high winds. If you live in an area prone to flooding, consider using sandbags to protect your property.
- Gather supplies: Ensure you have enough non-perishable food, water, flashlights, and batteries to last at least three days. Don’t forget essential items like medications, first aid supplies, and important documents. The South Florida Red Cross provides additional guidance on how to best prepare for hurricanes. Visit here.
- Plan your evacuation: Know your evacuation zone and have a clear plan for where to go if an evacuation order is issued. You can review your local evacuation zones and routes here.
