A Patriot Day Reflection

Friday, September 11, is the twenty-fifth year since the morning our country was attacked — in New York, at the Pentagon, and in a field near Shanksville. Nearly three thousand lives were taken. Families were changed in an hour. Congress named the date Patriot Day. It is not a holiday. It is a day to reflect and remember.
The law asks a simple civic act: fly the flag at half-staff, and keep a moment of silence for those who died. The first silence falls at 8:46 a.m., when the North Tower was struck. In the years since, we have also learned to remember those who came home from the ashes.
This summer, at Miami International Airport, the County dedicated Renaissance of Towers, a sculpture drawn of the Twin Towers as a tribute to the victims of that day.
The 9/11 Memorial echos a line from Virgil on the wall:
“No day shall erase you from the memory of time.”
We honor the women and men who ran toward the fire. We pray for the souls lost that day, for the families who still carry them, and for a nation that still holds human life is sacred.
Marile and I will gather with our children and pray for the souls lost that day and for the families they left behind.
